Kareem Rakim, better known by his stage name Kartell, was born Sept. 8th, 1991. The middle child of four siblings, Kartell was raised in a single-parent family in the 19th Ward of Rochester, NY. While growing up, Kartell listened to a wide variety of music in various genres. He recieved his stage name from his brother Terell (Kyro DaGrate).
Kartell has recieved awards acknowledging his musical abilities. Aside from being a talented lyricsit, the self-proclaimed "Prince of New York" is also known for playing a variety of instruments ranging from the piano to the drums. He was encouraged by his mother, Carolyn, to remain in school to secure a future if things didn't work out with his music. Through his words, Kartell expresses the struggles and hardships he has encountered throughout his lifetime, past and present. Though fairly young, Kartell has faced and witnessed a great deal of violence. Inspired by such individuals as Nas, Nat Turner and Lawrence Fishburn, Kartell is destined for a path that leads towards doing right and having strong leadership. As the first artist of Royal Black Ent.'s Unsigend Royalty, Kartell is well on his way to walking down that path. |
